Martin Schwartz: He Lost Money For Nine Years Before Making Millions Every Year

INSIGHTS INTO THE MINDSET OF SUPER TRADERS – Part 14

“Most traders will quit and stay away from trading after blowing up a few trading accounts. But those with grit will constantly reflect upon their actions and seek to better themselves, which separates the winners from the losers.” – Rayner Teo

Name: Martin Schwartz
Year of birth: 1945
Nationality: American
Hobbies: Professional trading and professional horse racing

Career
In 1967, Martin attended Amherst College. He also earned an MBA from Columbia University in 1970. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves from the year 1968 to the year 1973.  He also worked as a financial analyst at E. F. Hutton.

He saved about one $100,000 USD and went into full-time trading, buying a seat on the American Stock Exchange. That year, he made a profit of $600, 000 USD and in the following year, he made a profit of $1.2 million USD. But we need to know that prior to that time, he was a consistent loser in the markets.

In 1984, Martin became famous when he won the U.S. Investing Championship. He’s made great wealth from the markets. He authored a book titled “Pit Bull: Lessons from Wall Street's Champion Day Trader.” He loves to go for short-term market fluctuations, and being successful at doing that, he began managing money for other people.

From the year 2002 till now, Martin Schwartz has been winning in professional horse racing.

Insights
  1. Contrary to some people’s opinion, it’s possible to become a successful trader using technical analysis. When Martin was trading based on fundamentals, he was losing. When he became a technical analyst he earned a fortune. However, there are also successful fundamental analysts. The lesson is that, you shouldn’t say something can’t work for others just because it isn’t working for you.

  1. You need to approach the markets as a serious business; those who comply with this fact get paid from those who don’t comply.

  1. You need to work hard before you can become a profitable trader. There’s nothing worth having which comes easily. Hard work is part of your probability of attaining success as a trader.

  1. We want to make money, without being necessarily right. We need to master our ego and realize that making money is more important than being right. We make money by cutting our losses, and we lose money by letting them run. Martin Schwartz says that by preserving your capital through the use of stops, you make it possible to wait patiently for a high-probability trade with a low-risk entry-point. One of the great tools of trading is the stop, the point at which you divorce yourself from your emotions and ego and admit that you´re wrong.

  1. Prepare for each trading day, for it matters much. No trades, no profits. You need to pull the trigger before you can hope to make any profits.

Conclusion: There are traders who’ve spent many years in the markets without being profitable. Isn’t it so frustrating when we keep on losing money in spite of the vast knowledge we’ve in the markets? We’ll be tempted from time to time to conclude that it’s impossible to make money trading Forex, yet we won’t give up because there is a kind of inner hope that would keep on pushing us to success. We definitely need to be courageous. We shouldn’t make things difficult for ourselves when trading. Majority of traders don’t want to agree that using difficult trading methods don’t increase profitability.

This article is ended with a quote from Martin:

“Trading is a psychological game. Most people think they are playing against the market, but the market doesn´t care. You’re really playing against yourself.”

Oxus Gold Is Now Rated a BUY

Oxus Gold stock (LSE:OXS) is now rated a buy because of the current bullish price action. The breakout that has been performed this month can still be sustained in spite of the correction that is currently happening.

We cannot enter a market simply because of a strong volume. There are other factors to be considered.  Looking at the chart, we can see that the price is above the EMA 21 and that the Williams’ % Range period 20 is not too far from the overbought territory. This is a ‘buy’ signal.

The best trading style for this market is position trading. Strong momentum may rise any moment. Therefore, do not forget that things can develop in the opposite way. Just like the case of Oxus Gold, a seemingly trendless market which appears safe for short-term traders can make a surprise move.

The price may eventually reach the resistance levels at 6.00 and 7.00.

This forecast is ended by the quote below:

“Once a person accepts the idea that he/she is a loser, it is extremely difficult to bring that person back to the idea that he can win. Hope has been lost to the extent that they begin to look for a miracle way to trade. Any confidence in themselves is gone.” – Andy Jordan

Monthly Forecast on Gulf Keystone (October 2015)

Gulf Keystone shares (LSE:GKP) are making noteworthy attempts to go up. The price dived further in August 2015, but it later rose before the end of that month. In September there was easement in the bullish effort; but right now, the price is making some bullish effort against all odds. What is the result of this?

The ADX period 14 is at the level 20, meaning that the market is not completely without momentum (though this is much likely to increase very soon). The DM+ is above the DM-, showing that the bulls are gaining some ground. The MACD, default parameters, has both its signal lines and histogram above the zero line. This is a Bullish Confirmation Pattern in the market. BUY!

Sometimes, a market in an equilibrium phase could start a sudden significant trending move. Pleasant or unpleasant news can come out anytime. It may not be a big business disaster or insolvency. It could simply be a scandal around the executives of the company.

Once you understand that trading is simply taking a positive expectancy approach in the long run, which may be longer than you think, then you would know that you just have to keep doing that in the face of all odds.

The bullish outlook on Gulf Keystone shares may last till the end of the year 2015.

This forecast is ended by the quote below:

“You need to look at the next 1,000 trades. This is not a race. It is a journey like every other journey. There will be hurdles and tests and without taking the long
term view it is very easy to be swayed off course at the slightest hiccup. Run your own race. Make sure you keep risk low. Ensure you have a positive expectancy, and if these are in place, all you need to do is keep placing the next 1,000 trades.”  – Nick Radge (Source: Tradersonline-mag.com)

Daily analysis of major pairs for October 5, 2015

The USD/CHF performed a large pullback on Friday, in the context of an uptrend. Unless the price goes below the support level at 0.9600, the pullback would proffer a wonderful opportunity to go long at a better price. The resistance level at 0.9800 could be tested this week, but a strong buying pressure is required for the resistance level at 0.9850 to be broken.

EUR/USD:  The EUR/USD was volatile last week, being alternated with short-term bullish and bearish swings. The rally that took place of October 2, 2015 enabled the price to test the resistance line at 1.1300. However, the price could not close above the resistance line, since it eased a little. The price could ease further today, enabling the support lines at 1.1150 and 1.1100 to be tested.

USD/CHF: The USD/CHF performed a large pullback on Friday, in the context of an uptrend. Unless the price goes below the support level at 0.9600, the pullback would proffer a wonderful opportunity to go long at a better price. The resistance level at 0.9800 could be tested this week, but a strong buying pressure is required for the resistance level at 0.9850 to be broken.

GBP/USD:  The Bearish Confirmation Pattern in this market is still a valid thing; in spite of the last bullish attempt. The bullish attempt could prove to be a false breakout, except the distribution territory at 1.5300 is overcome. There is an expectation of a large movement in this market this week, which would favor either the bull or the bear.

USD/JPY:  Owing to the ongoing struggle between the bull and the bear, this currency trading instrument has become quite choppy because there is not yet a strong directional movement. This week, the price would either break the supply level at 121.00 to the upside or break demand level at 118.00 to the downside. This condition must be fulfilled before it can be said that the consolidation phase in the market is over.

EUR/JPY: There is also no large directional movement here; though the bias remains bearish. An upwards movement of 200 pips could lead to a “buy” signal. It is possible that the Yen would lose some strength this week, which would help the price to go further north. Otherwise, we would see a test of the demand zones at 133.50 and 133.00.
